The European regulatory environment for food is constantly evolving. Changing rules on novel foods, fortification, nutrition labelling and health claims are fundamentally reshaping the business environment for suppliers of food ingredients. While the global food industry and specific product sectors are well represented in Brussels, suppliers of ingredients have in the past not had a powerful voice for channelling input into the decision-making process.

In February 2005, major manufacturers of food ingredients took the initiative of forming the Platform for Ingredients in Europe – PIE. PIE provides Europe’s institutions with a unique food ingredient perspective on all regulatory developments of relevance for the sector.
